Reciprocity Print E-mail

Any person who is registered or certified as an architect in another jurisdiction recognized by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), may obtain registration in Oregon by meeting the following requirements:

  1. Hold a current NCARB certificate and active architectural registration in another NCARB recognized jurisdiction.
  2. Have met the registration requirements equivalent to those in effect in Oregon on the date of the applicant's initial registration. Equivalent requirements include:

    a.  January 1, 1995: NAAB accredited professional degree requirement implemented. (1) Alternative
method is the broadly experienced architect (BEA) program.
    b.  August 22, 1984: NCARB Intern Development Program (IDP) requirement implemented.
    Exception:
Applicants who have not completed the NCARB/IDP program are required to be
registered and practicing architecture for a minimum of two years following registration in another
    NCARB jurisdiction.
    c.  Completion of NCARB's broadly experienced foreign architect (BEFA) program is another
    alternative method.

3.   Applicants must have successfully passed the NCARB Architectural Registration Examination (ARE).

4.  Applicants must provide evidence of having been examined for seismic and lateral forces knowledge by NCARB ARE divisions (Lateral Forces or Structural Systems).

Applicants for reciprocal transfer are required to contact NCARB to arrange for transmittal of their council certificate (blue cover) to the Oregon Board. An Oregon application (available through NCARB, or you may obtain it from this website, along with the instructions) must be completed and returned, along with the Oregon reciprocity fee ($100 made payable to OBAE) to the Oregon Board.

All applicants, whether by reciprocity or exam, must pass the Board's jurisprudence examination.  This is taken through this website with a user name and password provided by the Board.  Applicants will be notified of instructions to take the jurisprudence exam when you are eligible.  Oral interviews are not normally required for reciprocity applicants; however, the Board reserves the right to require an oral interview of any candidate.  Those whose license has been inactive over five years will be required to attend an oral interview before being allowed to reinstate to active status.
